Minis World
Creativity
Try not to limit yourself to finished miniatures. If you choose to make your own, it's important to develop a "miniaturist eye", that's when you look at daily objects with a different point of view. You can find an infinite source of materials to be transformed into miniatures, borrowing tools and supplies from other crafts, like scrapbooking, sewing items, jewelry findings, and much more.
There is also the option to buy kits with all the supplies you'll need to make a specific miniature, as well as the instructions. They are excellent to improve your skills in miniature making or learning new techniques. And you won't have to buy regular supplies that would be too much to make only one item, if you don't need or want more than that one. All you'll need to have are some basic easy-to-find tools.
Important
- Most stores can answer your questions in English, and it's always a good idea to ask if they deliver to your country before placing an order.
- Most will take payments with credit card or Paypal account. Another information that it's better check and be sure before ordering.
- There are even more online stores dedicated to miniatures than brick and mortar ones. In several countries, specially English speaking ones (US, Canada, England, Australia) which have dollhouse tradition embedded in their culture. If you're travelling, check them beforehand and schedule a visit in your itinerary!
- Take a look at Websites page as well. Several artisans do sell online their own work or special supplies directly to customers.
Customs
Buying from another country usually means paying import taxes. Check the limits and the rates before ordering, to avoid surprises. Every country has their own rules.
Another important aspect to verify carefully before ordering from stores abroad is the list of what is allowed through customs - theirs and yours. You might think it's irrelevant as they are miniatures, but that a mistake. I've heard stories of items vetoed at customs for unbelievable reasons. Either because the seller wrote "miniature plants" and plants are forbidden - yes, I know they are not real plants, but customs agents don't have to know that! - or because it was made of seeds or plants, or any other material that is forbidden. So, better safe than sorry!
